Chapter History

Eta Upsilon Omega Chapter was the 25th chapter chartered in the Great Lakes Region of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.  The chartering took place on Saturday, February 1, 1962 at the historic Bancroft Hotel in downtown Saginaw.

The history of Eta Upsilon Omega is directly tied to that of Zeta Beta Omega in Flint, Michigan. The Sorors living in Saginaw commuted to Flint to attend chapter meetings and sorority related events. Although the commute was difficult, especially during the inclement weather of the winter months, these women were devoted to the high ideals of the sorority and the pledge the promised to uphold as members.

The newly established AKA chapter elected Marie Claytor, a community activist, as the first president. The chapter focused on fund raising activities for scholarships. At its core, service is the bedrock of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. This was true in 1908; it was true in 1962; and it remains true today.

National History

Founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC on January 15, 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African American college-trained women. The original group of nine women were Anna Easter Brown, Beulah Burke, Lillie Burke, Marjorie Hill, Margaret Flagg Holmes, Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, Lavinia Norman, Lucy Slowe and Marie Woolfolk Taylor.

Late in February 1908, seven sophomore women were admitted without initiation. These members were Norma Boyd, Ethel Jones Mowbray, Alice Murray, Sarah Meriweather Nutter, Joanna Berry Shields, Carrie Snowden and Harriett Terry. These sixteen women are all recognized as Alpha Kappa Alpha founders.
