Ivylette Youth Group
The purpose of the Ivylette Youth Group is to encourage high scholastic and ethical standards; to promote unity and friendship among members in order to improve our social stature and to maintain a progressive interest in college.
Under the auspices of Eta Upsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, the Ivylette Youth Group was established in Saginaw, Michigan in 1969, seven years after Eta Upsilon Omega Chapter was chartered in 1962. The Ivylette Youth Group was born out of the desire among chapter members to promote academic excellence among high school young ladies while building their social skills, increasing their cultural awareness, and strengthening their character through service. Sara Terry Moton was the President of Eta Upsilon Omega Chapter when the youth group was established. Carrie Jackson-Zackrie, who joined Eta Upsilon Omega Chapter in 1963, was the founder and first advisor of the Ivylette Youth Group.
Over the years, the Ivylette Youth Group has performed countless number of community service activities. It has provided a venue for sisterly friendships to develop among college-bound young women. Former Ivylettes have gone on to serve in professional leadership positions in a variety of fields, including higher education, K-12 education, corporate positions, museums and the arts, health care, media broadcasting, social work, and journalism.
